On June 30, 2004 NOAA Weather Radios began carrying warnings for a variety of civil, non-weather events.

The comprehensive message warnings include child abductions, 911 telephone outages, nuclear power plant warnings, immediate evacuation and bio-chemical hazard warnings and more.

The Event Warning System immediately activates when an event warning is issued. Weather radios operate in "stand-by mode" and activate when a warning is issued.

Many weather alert radios now feature S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) technology, allowing you to localize emergency warnings to your specific area. The Event Warning System operates in tandem with S.A.M.E. Owners of older weather radios that do not have the advanced feature could be missing valuable alert information.
